Why choose a marquee wedding?
A marquee turns a beautiful garden into a wedding venue built entirely around you. It means your guest list is not limited by the size of a dining room, and you can choose the layout, the style and the lighting from scratch – from classic white pole marquees to tipis, stretch tents or clear-roofed structures for dining under the stars.
Pairing a marquee with an exclusive use house gives you the best of both: the space and freedom of a marquee for the celebration, and a house full of bedrooms so your closest guests can stay all weekend. We have four marquee wedding venues, including Toft Estate in Leek, Greenwood Estate in Hailsham and Chepstow Manor in Chepstow.
Marquee, tipi or stretch tent?
Traditional pole and frame marquees suit long tables, a dance floor and a classic feel, and can be lined, floored and heated for any season. Tipis bring a relaxed, festival atmosphere with natural wood poles and open sides on warm days. Stretch tents are flexible and work well on uneven ground. Your marquee company will advise on size – as a guide, allow roughly two square metres per guest for a seated dinner and dancing.
How the house and marquee work together
The house becomes your base for the weekend: getting ready in the bedrooms, a drinks reception on the terrace or in the drawing room, and a warm place for older guests to retreat to. The marquee takes the wedding breakfast and the evening party, keeping noise and set-up away from the bedrooms. Many couples also use the house for a relaxed Friday dinner and Sunday brunch.
Planning a marquee wedding
A marquee needs a little more planning than an indoor venue. Talk to the venue early about where the marquee can go, access for lorries and the build crew, power, lighting, toilets and catering tents. Most marquee companies need a day or two to build and take down, so it is worth booking the venue for extra nights. Always have a wet-weather plan for drinks and photographs.
Styling your marquee
A marquee is a blank canvas, so styling makes a big difference. Festoon and fairy lights, draped linings, wooden floors, long trestle tables and plenty of flowers all help it feel warm and intimate. Think about a chill-out area with sofas, a separate bar and a dance floor near the band or DJ, and keep the house nearby for a quiet escape.
How many guests can stay?
Our marquee wedding venues sleep between 24 and 48 people, and two of them sleep 30 or more. The marquee lets you welcome many more guests for the day and evening, while the bedrooms go to the wedding party, family and closest friends. Use the Sleeps filter above to see the venues big enough for the people you want to stay.
Getting married at the venue
In England and Wales, a venue needs a wedding licence for the legal ceremony, and a ceremony in a marquee may need specific approval. Venues showing Wedding Licence or Wedding Receptions host weddings today. Many couples hold the legal ceremony at a nearby register office or church, then a personal ceremony in the garden or marquee. In Scotland, an authorised celebrant can marry you almost anywhere.
Costs and when to book
With a marquee wedding you budget for the venue hire and the marquee separately. Venue prices depend on the house, the season and the number of nights, while marquee costs depend on size, style, flooring, lighting and heating. Summer weekends are the most popular for marquees, so book the venue and the marquee company early – often 12 to 24 months ahead. Enter your dates above to see which venues are free.
