FAQs

Answers to the questions couples ask most about exclusive use wedding venues and booking through Exclusive Use.

About Exclusive Use

What does exclusive use mean?
You hire the whole venue for your stay: every bedroom, the reception rooms, the kitchen and the grounds. There are no other guests and no shared spaces, so the house, castle or estate is yours from arrival to departure.
How does Exclusive Use work?
Search by area, dates and number of guests, then send an enquiry from the venue page. Your enquiry goes straight to the venue, who will come back to you with availability and prices. There is no booking fee for couples.
What is the free wedding concierge?
If you would rather we did the searching, tell us your date, area and numbers and our concierge will suggest venues that fit, check availability and introduce you. It is free to use. Ask the concierge.

Booking and payment

Who do we book with and pay?
You book directly with the venue. Each venue sets its own booking terms, so prices, deposits and payment dates are confirmed by the venue when they reply to your enquiry.
What are the payment terms?
These depend on the venue. Most ask for a deposit to secure your dates, with the balance due before your stay. The venue will set out the exact amounts and dates in writing before you book.
Can we hold the dates provisionally?
Some venues offer a short provisional hold and some do not. Ask the venue when you enquire, and confirm quickly if you have found the one, as popular weekends book up well in advance.
What is the cancellation policy?
Each venue has its own cancellation policy, which forms part of your booking with them. Please read it carefully before you pay a deposit, and consider wedding insurance to protect your plans.
Is there a security deposit?
Most venues take a refundable security deposit before arrival, to cover any damage during your stay. The amount varies by venue and is returned after your stay once the venue has been checked.

Your wedding

Can we get married at the venue?
Many of our venues hold a wedding licence, so you can marry in the house or the grounds. Others are ideal for the reception, with a register office or church a short drive away. In Scotland, an authorised celebrant can marry you almost anywhere. Each venue page explains what is possible there.
Can we invite day and evening guests?
At most wedding venues, yes. Your closest guests stay overnight and further guests join for the day or evening. Each venue sets a maximum number of guests, and there is sometimes a charge for extra day guests.
Can we have a marquee?
Some venues have space for a marquee or tipi. Ask the venue first, as your marquee supplier may need to visit to check the ground and access.
Can we bring our own caterers and suppliers?
Many exclusive use venues let you choose your own caterers, bar and suppliers, while others work with a list of recommended suppliers. Check with the venue before you book anyone.
How late can the party go on?
It depends on the venue and its licence. Because you have the whole venue to yourselves, finishing times are often later than at a hotel, but music and noise rules still apply. The venue will confirm the details.

Your stay

How many nights do we need to book?
Most venues ask for a minimum of two or three nights at weekends, which suits a wedding weekend of welcome drinks, the big day and a relaxed breakfast after. Some offer shorter stays midweek.
What are the arrival and departure times?
Each venue is different, but check-in is usually in the afternoon and check-out in the morning. Some venues offer early access for setting up, so ask if you need it.
Are dogs allowed?
Some venues welcome dogs, often for a small extra charge to cover cleaning. Please check the venue page or ask the venue.
Are the venues accessible for wheelchair users?
Many of our venues are historic buildings, so access varies. Some have ground-floor bedrooms and step-free access. Please ask the venue so they can explain exactly what is available.
Can we hire a venue for a celebration that is not a wedding?
Yes. Our venues are also hired for milestone birthdays, anniversaries, family get-togethers and team retreats. See our exclusive use party and celebration venues.
